Lost Domaine or Le Grand Meaulnes
Lost Domaine
Lost Domaine (Lost Estate) Oil on canvas, 72 x 36 inches
About the Inspiration
This painting, Lost Domaine, is inspired by the celebrated novel, Le Grand Meaulnes, written by Alain-Fournier
Le Grand Meaulnes—the only novel by French author Alain-Fournier—is a coming-of-age story set in rural France.
Published in 1913, Le Grand Meaulnes is narrated by François Seurel, a sensitive fifteen-year-old who looks back on his formative friendship with the restless, impetuous Augustin Meaulnes. Meaulnes’s fateful journey—both literal and emotional—begins when he stumbles upon a fantastical costume party at a secret estate, where, for a fleeting moment, he connects with the ethereal Yvonne de Galais. This single, radiant memory becomes the centre of his universe, shaping the destinies of everyone connected to him.
My painting captures Meaulnes at the crossroads of experience and memory, facing the reality that the enchanted domaine and Yvonne de Galais are forever intertwined—and perhaps forever out of reach.
Artist’s Statement
As an artist, I am fascinated by the fragile border between reality and imagination, and by the stories that shape the way we see the world. Through Lost Domaine, I invite viewers to reflect on their moments of enchantment and loss, and to find grace in moving forward with hope.
Reflection
Le Grand Meaulnes is a universal story of lost love and the longing for worlds we can never fully reclaim. Through this painting, I wanted to evoke the bittersweet beauty of memory, reminding us that our experiences should empower us, not bind us to an unattainable past.
We should not spend our lives attempting to relive the past, but allow our memories to nourish us, as we continue to move forward.“
