The Unowned Dream
The Unowned Dream: Magickal Practice and the Illusion of Separation
The concept of unowned dreams, explained through magick and the QBL,
1. “Do We Dream Alone.”
I’m suggesting that on one level, the very content of our subconscious, our fears, desires, and inspirations, is not generated in a vacuum. It is fed by the collective unconscious, a Jungian concept, our culture, our relationships, and the subtle influences of the entire “web” of existence. Our most private inner world is, in part, a reflection and a product of the whole.
2. The Web Paradigm and Radical Responsibility
The “web paradigm” is a metaphor for systems theory, which states that everything is connected to everything else. In such a system:
- No Action is Isolated: A kind word can ripple outwards, improving the day of countless unknown people. Conversely, an act of cruelty or negligence has downstream effects far beyond its initial target.
- The End of the “Separate Self”: This is the crucial, and often uncomfortable, conclusion. If we are truly nodes in a network, then the idea of a solitary, self-contained “individual” is an illusion. We are “points of focus.” We are the place where universal processes of life, consciousness, and society are localised and expressed in unique ways. Nothing is private.
This realisation places a “huge responsibility upon us all.” It means our thoughts, words, and actions matter on a cosmic scale because they directly affect the health and state of the entire network.
3. The QBL Illustration: A Map
The QBL Tree of Life is not just an analogy; it’s a precise map of this very concept. See Jacob’s Ladder QBL Arrangement for wider ramifications of this concept.
- The Sephiroth as “Points of Focus”¹: Each Sephirah, e.g., Chesed – Loving-kindness, Geburah – Judgment, Tiphareth – Beauty, is a point of focused energy. It is a specific archetypal state or emanation. We, as individuals, can be seen as microcosms of this entire tree, with these same forces playing out within us.
- The Paths as the Web: The 22 connecting paths are the relationships, the channels of influence, the “communicaters” of the network. They show how an impulse in one area, an excess of unyielding Judgment – Geburah) must travel through other states (like Mercy or Balance) before it manifests in another.
- Disturbance and Repercussion: A “disturbance” in one Sephirah, say, a blockage in the flow of Hod (Splendour, which relates to communication and logic), wouldn’t just result in poor communication. It would affect Netzach (Endurance, its partner), unbalance Yesod (Foundation), and ultimately distort how divine energy reaches Malkuth, the Kingdom, our physical reality. Nothing acts alone.
Synthesis: The Individual in the Whole
So, we arrive at a non-dualistic understanding, one that reconciles the apparent contradiction between being an individual and being part of a whole.
“None of us are truly individuals; we are points of focus, like the sephiroth, operating within a greater whole.”
This is the heart of it. We are not separate from the whole, just as waves are expressions of the ocean. A wave has a unique, temporary identity—it can be tall, powerful, and crash dramatically on the shore. But it is never not the ocean.
This perspective is both humbling and empowering.
- Humbling: It dissolves the ego’s claim to total sovereignty. Our successes are supported by countless others (seen and unseen), and our successes and failures are not ours to bear in absolute isolation.
- Empowering: It means that our personal growth, healing, and enlightenment are not just for us. By becoming a clearer, more balanced “point of focus,” we stabilise and illuminate the entire network. Your inner work is a cosmic service.
In conclusion, we have moved from a simple, unsettling question about dreams to a grand and coherent worldview. It’s a view that aligns with modern systems thinking, ancient wisdom traditions, and a deep ecological and ethical awareness. It’s a reminder that to tend to oneself, with consciousness and care, is to tend to the universe.
We influence others by the way we conduct ourselves within the adventure of life’s rich tapestry.
Footnote
¹ The sephiroth represent gravitational nodes of influence. In this view, the spiritual path is not a gentle float toward the light. It is a conscious navigation of a cosmic force-field, using the pulls and pushes of these divine nodes to steer one’s soul toward balance with Tiphereth and ultimat union with the daemon..
