Roger Williamson: Visual Artist, Author, and Founder of Magus Books & Herbs
Roger Williamson is a Minneapolis-based visual artist and author whose work explores the intersection of French Symbolism, Western esotericism, and classical mythology. Born in Loughborough, England, in 1947 and raised in Coventry, his creative path was shaped by an esoteric upbringing. His mother introduced him to dream control, tarot, and Western magick, forming a foundation that would later merge with his deep appreciation for French Symbolist art.
This unique synthesis informs his entire output. His paintings and writings create a personal “dream theatre,” inviting audiences to explore timeless myths re-envisioned for a modern context. He aims to reintroduce mystery into contemporary life, encouraging individuals to live what he describes as “effulgent and invigorating lives, revitalised from their subconscious.”
Williamson is the creator of the Tarot of the Morning Star deck and the author of several books, including The Sun at Night and The Black Book of the Jackal.
Beyond his artistic practice, Williamson is the founder of Magus Books and Herbs, established in Minneapolis in September 1992. The store became a legendary hub for the esoteric community. While the original herbalist, Liz Johnson, now owns and operates the store, she faithfully upholds Williamson’s original vision while simultaneously enriching it with her unique personality and perspective. His legacy endures through both his captivating body of creative work and the physical space he created to nurture spiritual inquiry.
