Glain Nadredd Serpent Stone of Celtic Mythology Les Nadredds serpent Oil on canvas, 48 inches by 36 inches.  This picture is dedicated to Arthur Machen and his novel The White People. Glain Nadredd is the Serpent Stone of Celtic mythology, sometimes referred to as Adder Stone, which were believed to be created by a coming together of snakes, normally occurring in Spring, but more auspicial on May Eve. The stones, thought to be created from snakes saliva, were claimed to have magical qualities, much like mirrors, that would allow entry into the spirit world. In the Mabinogion, Peredur is given a magical stone that allows him […]

Zeus and Io, Io Tells Her Story

Zeus Io, Io Tells Her Story Zeus Io.  Io was, in Greek mythology, a priestess of Hera in Argos. Seduced by Zeus, he changed her into a heifer to escape detection. His wife Hera sent ever-watchful Argus with 100 eyes to guard her, but Hermes was sent to distract the guardian and slay him. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 48 inches, 2011. My objective in creating the picture was to encapsulate in a single image the mythological journey of Io and her relationship with Zeus, Hera and Hermes. Sabbat or Dark Interpreter, De Quincy Dreams of Levana and Our Ladies of Sorrow Oil on wood, 48 inches by 48 inches, 2016 Since the Middle Ages, until comparatively recently, a conjecture of public opinion held the view that visits of witches and warlocks to the Sabbat were a physical experience. In recent times this view has, by many, been transformed into a concept  that attendance at the Sabbat is induced by hallucinogenic substances, ingredients often absorbed through the skin from the well known “flying ointment”. In the Pyramid Texts of Ancient […]

Greek God of Sleep Hypnos

Greek God of Sleep Hypnos Oil on canvas, 16 inches by 20 inches, 2015.  SOLD. Inspired by a bronze statue from the British Museum London which I first encountered in the late 1960’s early 70’s. The god of sleep Hypnos, first appears in mythology in the works of one of the earliest Greek poets, Hesiod (lived around 700 BC), where he as (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death) were the terrible sons of Nyx (Night). He was, however, generally viewed as benevolent to mankind. The god was frequently mentioned in literary sources, and associated with poppies and sleep-inducing herbs. Hypnos’ wings allowed him to move […]
